How it works

Check your router's admin page, or use a Wi-Fi analyser app to see your neighbours' channels too.
2. Tick the channels in use
Select every 2.4 GHz channel that's actually active. The more complete you are, the more honest the advice.
3. Set the channel
Apply the top recommendation in Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA. Expect to re-pair your devices.
No rules of thumb — actual arithmetic: we use the fixed channel plans from IEEE 802.15.4 (Zigbee, 2 MHz per channel) and 802.11 (Wi-Fi, 20 MHz per channel) and work out how many MHz stay clear for each Zigbee channel. Frequently asked questions
Why do Wi-Fi and Zigbee interfere?
They share the same 2.4 GHz band. A Wi-Fi channel is about 20 MHz wide; a Zigbee channel is only 2 MHz. If your Zigbee channel sits inside an active Wi-Fi channel, the router is transmitting straight over it. Zigbee devices use very little power, so they lose that fight — the result is a sensor going 'unavailable' or a light that responds slowly.
Why do 15, 20 and 25 usually come out on top?
Almost every router runs on Wi-Fi channel 1, 6 or 11, because those don't overlap each other. That leaves narrow 5 MHz gaps between them, and Zigbee 15, 20 and 25 land exactly in those gaps, with 1 MHz of air on either side — which is the most the band plan physically allows. If your neighbours use other channels the answer shifts, and that's what this tool works out for you.
Can't I just use channel 26? It looks the clearest.
On paper, yes — in practice, no. Channels 25 and 26 sit at the top of the band where the permitted transmit power is lower, and many devices and coordinators support them poorly or not at all. You end up with a clean channel, short range and devices that refuse to pair. That's why this tool deliberately ranks them lower and flags them as 'limited device support'.
How do I change the Zigbee channel?
In your coordinator: Zigbee2MQTT uses the channel setting in configuration.yaml; ZHA has it under the radio settings. Be aware that on most setups you'll have to re-pair all your devices afterwards, because they keep following the old channel. So it's best to get it right when you first set the network up.
What if no channel comes out clear?
In a busy apartment block the spectrum really can be full. Then it helps more to move the Wi-Fi devices that can handle it over to 5 GHz, add extra Zigbee routers (mains-powered devices) to strengthen the mesh, or move the coordinator away from your router and any USB 3.0 ports using an extension cable — those are a notorious source of interference in their own right.
